As posted on Lighthousestock.com. Hard to believe but shooting lighthouses at times can be quite a challenging situation. While they may not be moving or in action sometimes their location can put you in touch with the harsh elements.
On a Door County photo shoot for a local client I had decided on a side trip to the Sturgeon Bay Pierhead Lighthouse. I had seen a different location to view the lighthouse in a publication and decided to give it a try. After walking about 100 yards in waste high snow I found a spot which afforded me a classic composition shot. With the temperature at minus 10 and 20 mph winds I knew my time was limited.
The foreground snow offered great contrast to the bright red lighthouse giving you a base reference point. Your eyes then follow the catwalk out of the scene and makes you wonder what is to the left. I also had to bracket the exposures to compensate for the bright snow. I felt that it was important to expose for the sky and I could later pull out the details of the very white snow in processing.
