PEGGY MORSCH - About Me

Peggymorsch2Since my youth I have been excited by photographic imagery!  The moving images made by Gordon Parks for Life Magazine and the stunning beauty of the natural world and global villages in National Geographic Magazine, stirred me to record the world I experienced.  I began that process at 22, when I photographed my student athletes in track & field, while teaching and coaching.  It evolved into a more bold and graphic vision of the natural world that illuminated the drama of light and moment, with purposefully composed images showing the subtlety of seasons and people.

My images are motivated by my emotions and thoughts that occur when I take in a scene before me.  Whether it’s people, a place or a thing, I photograph what I feel.  However, there are many times that this occurs all instantaneously and subconsciously, and I’m not clearly aware of what it was I felt or what I truly saw, until I study the image.  Upon viewing the image I’ll notice the color harmony or the juxtaposition of subjects in the image and how it all flawlessly fell together without consciously recognizing it at the time the image was made.  I’ve often said that my best work comes when I get out of my own way but perhaps Sam Abell, a famous photographer said it better.  “My best work is often almost unconscious and occurs ahead of my ability to understand it.”

On the more “academic” side, you’ll find that I’m a graduate of the Rocky Mountain School of Photography Summer Intensive program and a member of both the Professional Photographers Association and the Wisconsin Professional Photographers Association.  I believe in the concept of Darwinism and continue to evolve and adapt.  My work has taken me to Chile, Alaska, Europe, various states and my own backyard.  Publications include coffee table books, calendars and cards, as well as images hung in private collections.

“You learn to see by practice.  It’s just like playing tennis; you get better the more you play.  The more you look around at things, the more you see.  The more you photograph, the more you realize what can be photographed and what can’t be photographed.  You just have to keep doing it.”  Eliot Porter.
